Dr. Madhumita Barooah

Dr. Madhumita Barooah, a Fulbright Fellow is an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology. After completing her Undergraduate in Agriculture from Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University, Hyderabad, she joined the Assam Agricultural University for her Maser in Agricultural Biotechnology. She obtained her Doctoral degree in 2004 from University of Exeter, UK working on the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea. She worked with Professor Nick Talbot the present Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Exeter on unraveling the molecular basis of the blast disease infection process. After her return she initiated and established microbial biotechnology research in the department. She held the Norman Borlaug fellowship at the Penn State University, USA in 2006 and expanded her work on the blast fungus. Recently in 2015, she worked as a DBT Overseas Associate with Dr. Andreas Karaztais to understand the acid resistant mechanism in Staphylococus aureas at the University of Reading. Madhumita is also holder of a certificate in American Law from Georgetown University, Washington, USA and was pre-doctoral fellow with a training in Intellectual Property Rights at the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University, USA.

Madhumita is a recipient of several fellowships including Fulbright Fellowship, Commonwealth fellowship for her doctoral studies, Norman Borlaug fellowship, CSIR Senior Research fellowship, DBT Fellowship and North East Council studentship. She had successfully completed several externally funded project and currently the Principal of three extra mural funded projects. She has number of publications to her credit including one in “Science”. She has guided a number of M.Sc students and supervised students for their doctoral research. She is a recognized Ph. D guide for Assam University and Dibrugarh University and a reviewer of several research journals including PLoS One, Process Biochemistry,Molecular Biology, Current Bioinformatics,Journal of Proteomics & Bioinformatics, OMICS Group
