Application of Bioinputs in Agriculture : Professor Bidyut Kumar Sarmah Speaks on Sustainable Agriculture at Awareness Program in Karbi Anglong, Assam
Date: 12-11-24
Event Details:
In a significant step toward promoting sustainable agriculture in Northeast India, an awareness program on the "Application of Bioinputs in Agriculture" was organized by DBT-NECAB, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat. Held in Karbi Anglong, Assam, the program aimed to educate farmers and local stakeholders on the benefits and practical applications of bioinputs to improve crop health and productivity.Professor Bidyut Kumar Sarmah, a respected figure in agricultural science and sustainable farming practices, was a key speaker at the event. In his address, Professor Sarmah highlighted the importance of bioinputs, including biofertilizers, bio-pesticides, and compost, as eco-friendly alternatives to chemical inputs. He explained how these organic methods can enhance soil fertility, reduce dependency on synthetic chemicals, and increase crop resilience to pests and diseases, ultimately leading to healthier yields and improved soil health over time.
The program, organized by the North East Centre for Agricultural Biotechnology (DBT-NECAB) under Assam Agricultural University, is part of a broader initiative to empower farmers with knowledge and practical skills in sustainable agriculture. Professor Sarmah’s presentation also emphasized how bioinputs like biochar and vermicompost can restore nutrient balance to the soil, combatting issues related to soil degradation—a pressing concern in Northeast India’s agricultural landscape.
Participants, including farmers, local agricultural officers, and students, actively engaged with Professor Sarmah during a Q&A session, seeking guidance on the practical implementation of bioinput techniques on their farms. The insights shared during this session fostered a deeper understanding of how bioinputs contribute to sustainable farming and the long-term preservation of soil health.
DBT-NECAB’s awareness program reflects Assam Agricultural University's commitment to equipping farmers in Assam and beyond with sustainable solutions that can help them achieve greater productivity without compromising the environment. Professor Sarmah's involvement and expertise added valuable insights, making the program a resounding success and inspiring local farmers to consider bioinputs as a viable path to sustainable and productive agriculture.
