International Day of Potato Celebration at Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, AAU, Jorhat

The International Day of Potato was celebrated with great enthusiasm today at the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Assam. The event was hosted by Dr. Manab Bikash Gogoi, and it witnessed a significant turnout of students, faculty members, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

The program commenced with an insightful introductory speech by Prof. Bidyut Kumar Sarmah, the Director of DBT-NECAB. Prof. Sarmah eloquently discussed the origin and historical significance of the potato, emphasizing its role as a staple food crop worldwide. Following Prof. Sarmah's speech, the invited speaker, Dr. Rupam Borgohain, Principal Scientist and Nodal Officer of APART at AAU, took the stage. Dr. Borgohain's address focused on the current trends and advancements in potato research and cultivation. He shared insights on the innovative agricultural practices being promoted under the Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART), aimed at enhancing the productivity and profitability of potato farming. Dr. Borgohain also discussed the challenges faced by potato farmers, including pest management and climate change, and presented potential solutions through modern biotechnology and sustainable farming techniques.

The celebration provided an excellent platform for knowledge sharing and discussion on the advancements in potato research and the future prospects of potato cultivation. The engaging speeches by the esteemed speakers were followed by an interactive session, where attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas on improving potato production and addressing related agricultural issues.
