Ten days DBT sponsored Hands on training programme on “Production of Biofertilizer & Entrepreneurship Development” organised and funded by the DBT-North East Centre for Agricultural Biotechnology (DBT-NECAB) through its “Programme on Biofertilizer” in the Dept of Soil Science, AAU, Jorhat has been inaugurated yesterday (April, 2) by Dr. Bidyut Kumar. Sarmah, Director, DBT-NECAB. Dr Sarmah captivated the participants with his enlightening speech highlighting the present scenario of biofertilizer on the context of global organic farming indicating the future prospect. He also emphasized the need of popularizing organic tea production especially among the small tea growers through application of biofertilizer and biopesticide and informed all participants about some of the efficient microbial strains isolated by AAU scientists. Resource persons Dr. M. Barooah, Dr. T. Nath, Dr. R.C. Boro, Dr. Manoj Chauhan and Dr. Popy Bora addressed the participants about importance of Biofertilizer as a component of organic farming. In all, 26 participants from across North Easter States participated in the training programme. The Course coordinator, Dr. R. Baruah, welcomed the participants and all resource persons and emphasized importance of such training for entrepreneurship development to promote organic agriculture in the N E region. Dr Baruah thanked the DBT, GoI for enormous support to conduct such training in a regular basis. A practical manual entitled “Biofertilizer Technology” both in English as well as in Assamese was also released and distributed to all participants.
